Choosing a MicroCement kit starts with the surface you already have, not just the finish you want. A smooth, properly prepared substrate and an existing tiled floor present different preparation questions. Understanding that difference helps you choose a system deliberately instead of buying materials first and discovering a missing step later.
The DECCO MicroTop RTU Starter Kit introduces the system for work over a smooth substrate. The Resurfacing Kit is designed for existing surfaces, including tile. Both bring together coordinated components, but they are not interchangeable shortcuts around preparation. Here is how to compare them for your project.
The quick answer: choose by substrate
Consider the Starter Kit when your project involves a smooth, stable and properly prepared substrate. It is intended for first-time MicroCement users, DIY enthusiasts and professional installers who want a convenient introduction to the DECCO system. A surface that looks smooth in a photograph still needs assessment before application.
Consider the Resurfacing Kit when the starting point is existing tile or a surface requiring a different preparation approach. Its product listing specifically identifies existing tiled surfaces among the recommended uses. That does not mean every tiled surface is ready to coat immediately. Tile joints, substrate stability and the required build-up still need attention under the DECCO Installation Guidelines.
What the Starter Kit includes
The current Starter Kit component list identifies MicroTop RTU 5 lbs, Primer Grip 1 lb, Ultra Seal Part A and Part B 32 oz, and WB Color Toner 2 oz. These are the listed material quantities, not a promise about tools or a substitute for application instructions.
MicroTop RTU is premixed and ready to apply; mix its contents thoroughly as directed. Do not extend that description to every component in the package. Ultra Seal is a separate Part A and Part B product with its own instructions. Read the current product documentation for each stage rather than assuming the coating and sealer are handled in the same way.
How the Resurfacing Kit differs
The Resurfacing Kit listing identifies both Coarse and Fine MicroTop RTU components, together with Primer Grip, Ultra Seal and WB Color Toner. That is an important distinction from the Starter Kit's listed coating component. Compare the current product pages when reviewing the complete material selection for your project.
Do not choose between the two kits by counting containers alone. The purpose is to match the preparation and coating system to the existing surface. If tile joints, changes in surface condition or other preparation questions are part of your project, ask DECCO to confirm the complete build-up before ordering.
Make a preparation checklist before comparing prices
Write down what the substrate is, where it is located and whether the project includes floors, walls or both. Record visible cracks, loose areas, joints or uneven transitions as questions for technical review. Photos and a simple description make it easier to explain the project without assuming that a kit will resolve every underlying issue.
For existing tile, specifically ask how the joints and the tile condition affect the system selection. For any floor, give particular attention to substrate stability. For bathrooms or showers, ask about the complete system, including waterproofing where required and the corresponding sealing procedures. A decorative finish should not be treated as a stand-alone waterproofing specification.
Compare project size without overpromising coverage
The Starter Kit FAQ describes approximately 50 sq ft under normal application conditions. Actual consumption varies with substrate, selected texture and application technique. Use that figure as an initial planning reference, not a guaranteed yield for every surface or a basis for calculating a different kit's coverage.
If your project is larger, covers several surface types or has uncertain preparation requirements, use Build My System to organize the scope. Do not assume that multiplying a small-kit coverage figure produces a complete material schedule. The preparation products, coating and sealer each need to be considered for the selected build-up.
Think beyond the material package
Review your application tools separately from the listed kit components. Check what equipment the current guidelines call for, what you already own and what needs to be sourced. The tools and accessories collection is a useful place to review application products, but the correct selection depends on your method and project.
Color is another decision to make before the installation stage. Review a physical sample when precise color choice matters. Lighting, texture, application technique and sealer can influence the appearance. A sample helps you make a design decision; it does not replace checking the substrate or selecting the complete system.
A simple next step
Start with three pieces of information: your existing substrate, your measured area and the intended use of the finished space. If that points to a smooth, prepared surface, review the Starter Kit. If it points to existing tile, review the Resurfacing Kit and its preparation requirements. If anything remains unclear, use Build My System or contact DECCO before buying.
The right kit is the one that fits the starting surface and the complete application plan, not simply the one with the most appealing name. Professionals can also review the DECCO Trade Program for technical support, training resources and project assistance. Confirm the system first, then place the material order with a clearer understanding of the work ahead.
